The subclass 417 and 462 visas are similar, with the main difference being that each visa is available to passport holders of specific countries. Additionally, the subclass 462 visa has educational requirements which must be satisfied, with the individual requirements dependent on the country of passport.

Both visas allow certain tourists aged between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive) – and Canadian, French and Irish citizens 18 – 35 years old (inclusive) – to live, work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months.  

Visa holders can generally work for up to six months with any one employer and can study for up to four months. Work up to 12 months for some types of specified work in regional areas may be permitted.

A second 417/ 462 visa may be granted to those applicants who complete three months of specified work in regional Australia while holding their first 417/ 462 visa, and meet the relevant criteria.

A third 417/ 462 visa may be granted to those applicants who complete six months of specified work in regional Australia while holding their second 417/462 visa, or a bridging visa, and meet the relevant criteria.
